Shoot Benchmarking Results 2009/2010

Wednesday, July 28th 2010

We are delighted to announce the results of the first GunsOnPegs & Smiths Gore Shoot Benchmarking Survey and it has certainly given us some very interesting information.

Shoots were canvassed earlier on this year in an attempt to get as much information on each of them enabling us to analyse the data and gain averages across a range of areas. All the data supplied is held in the strictest confidence and each shoot will receive a personalised copy of the results.

This year's benchmarking exercise is based on data from 78 shoots in England, Scotland and Wales. The shoots operate over 219,000 acres, shot over 1,300 days in the 09/10 season, put down over 580,000 birds and employ 110 full time or part time staff.

The shoots have been analysed as a group and by whether the shoots considered themselves commercial or non-commercial / private, a small proportion of which let days to help cover their running costs.

Did you know that it costs a shoot on average, £13.33 to put a bird down? This is the cost whether the bird is shot or not so if it is eaten by the fox then that is £13.33 wasted... There are more facts like this within the document.

Please click on the pdf link on the right to download a full copy of the results.

There is also a clip from BBC Radio 4's Farming Today programme where Chris Horne and David Steel comment on the results. To listen, simply click the play button on the right hand side.
