BURGHLEY HOUSE

The Burghley House shoot is centred on the great Elizabethan house built by the first Lord Burghley in the 16th Century.

The House and Park are open to the public for the majority of the year and more details can be found at www.burghley.co.uk.

The House is a member of the  the Treasure Houses of England which are nine of the most magnificent Palaces, Houses and Castles in England today.

The House is managed by Miranda Rock, a direct descendent of the first Lord Burghley and her husband Orlando who live in the house with their 4 children.

Burghley is on the East side of the A1 just South of Stamford and 90 miles North of London and 15 miles from Peterborough Station (55 mins from London, Kings Cross)

BURGHLEY PARK

Burghley House is set in Burghley Park which was extensively remodelled by capability Brown in the 18th Century.

The most important single activity in the park at Burghley is the Burghley Horse Trials which has been run every September for the last 50 years and is recognised as one of the top four 3 Day Events in the World .

Burghley House Shoot

The Burghley House shoot is the principal shoot in the 20,000 acre Burghley Estate and uses about 1,500 acres of the Capability Brown Park and surrounding arable farmland.

There are about 20 shooting days a year of which about half are let and about half are kept for the family.
Days available include 7th November 150 birds; 8th December 200+ birds 29th December 250 birds
The let days are of two types.  Great Hall days which would normally be of 200 to 300 birds with guns meeting at the House, coffee, lunch and tea served by the house staff  in the magnificent Elizabethan Great Hall and  Shoot Through days which are smaller days of normally 120 to 180 birds when meeting at the Keeper’s House, with elevenses arranged by the keeper and shooting through with lunch usually at a pub arranged by the client.

Normally it is expected that 8 guns will be shooting in the line.

Loaders and instructors are available.

The management and the head keeper

The shoot is run by Orlando Rock who lives in the House with his wife Miranda and who have managed the House since 2007 and his father-in-law Simon Leatham who together with his wife Lady Victoria Leatham lived in the house and ran it between 1982 and 2007.

Great Hall days are normally hosted by Simon Leatham.

The Head Keeper is David Frisby who has been at Burghley for 8 years and he normally runs the Shoot Through days.

Burghley House  the Great Hall

Great Hall days commence with the guns meeting for coffee and briefing in the Great Hall where lunch and tea are served later in the day.

The quality of the hospitality is very high with a choice of menu available and high quality food and drinks served by the family butler and under butler.

Either Simon Leatham or Orlando Rock will host the day

Order of the Day

Great Hall Days

Guns and non-shooting guests  are requested to arrive at 8.30 - 8.45am for coffee in the Great Hall.
After the draw for pegs we will “boot and suit” and embark the gun’s trailer non-shooting guests, dogs etc. to be ready to leave at 9.15am.
After the second drive we will stop for elevenses and after the fourth drive we will return to the Great hall for lunch.
At the end of the day we will return to the Great hall for tea.
We will provide sloe gin and sausage rolls and other drinks at the morning break and a full bar at lunchtime. The keeper will join the guns for tea and bring in the score cards and oven ready birds for the guns to take home.

Shoot Through Days

Guns and non-shooting guests are requested to arrive at 8.30-8.45am at the Keeper's House where tea and coffee will be provided in the beater's room. After a shoot briefing from the Keeper and the draw for pegs, we will embark the gun's trailer to be ready to leave at 9.15am.
After the third drive we will stop for "elevenses" and after the sixth drive we will return to the Keeper's House to receive the game cards and oven ready birds before departing to the pub of your choice for lunch.

The drives and the birds

There are about 20 drives of which about half are out of woods or woods extended by cover crops and about half are from cover crops which are planted with a mixture of canary grass, maize and various mixtures.  We are beginning to introduce pampass grass round the outside of cover crops to provide exceptional cover and warmth.

The woods are mainly mixed hardwoods.  There are two woods known as Two Lords and David's Planting on either side of a small valley which enable us to show high quality birds whatever the weather conditions and which tend to be the high point of our larger great hall days.  Cover crops are planted to make the most of the available contours.

The drives are normally pegged from the right for 8 guns and sometimes number 1 or 8 will be a back gun to share out the shooting better.  The number 5 peg is always red to make it easier for guns to find their pegs

Pheasants are now mostly nearly pure bred Kansas birds which we have found fly exceptionally well for us.  Partridges are reared from day-old chicks

Transport

The guns normally travel from the House to the drives in a comfortable trailer with large windows towed by a Range rover to avoid having numerous vehicles.

The terms, insurance/ shot gun certificates

Detailed terms of any letting arrangement will be provided to those interested before they make a commitment.
The leader of each team must make sure that each of their guns has proper third party insurance of at least £2m and have shotgun certificates evidence of which should be brought with them on the day.

House Tours

A guide can be made available to take non-shooting guests on a State Room tour before lunch.

Cartridges can be provided at cost if ordered in advance.

The dates available - see events listing

Parking

There is ample parking for guns and supporters in the Stable Courtyard at Burghley House for Great Hall days and at the Keepers Cottage (The Round House) for Shoot Through Days.
